As the largest information technology (IT) organization within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), CBP's Office of Information and Technology (OIT) is integral in protecting and supporting national security and enabling our personnel to carry out their mission amidst ever-changing requirements. CBP blocks approximately 100 million network cyber attempts each workday. These attacks are increasingly sophisticated, targeting government systems and critical infrastructure with the intent to intimidate targets, steal sensitive information, or disrupt operations. Technology & Trade
This panel will set the scene for the top three challenges in their respective portfolios and what innovations have been tested and what additional opportunities exist. As technology has evolved, CBP has made enhancements to its suite of tools to tackle, for example: exponential growth in volume of trade; novel ways that illicit actors attempt to evade restrictions and prohibitions; shifting trade routes and supply chains; targeting using new or different data sources; and adapting to the speed of technology (AI, quantum cryptography, forensic origin investigations). With changes in the administration, there is an expectation of much greater focus on border security in general, and also particular focus on trade, drugs, and tariffs. Is CBP ready to address these priorities with existing resources? If not, what are the key areas of support needed?
